ABOUT THE ARTIST

MALCOLM SEARS

I was born in 1951 in Maidstone, Kent UK.

When I was ten years old I sat in class and watched the child in front of me use a pencil to completely shade in a sheet of white paper.  The teacher spotted this and shouted at her for wasting time scribbling. I thought she had made magic.

As I grew up I followed my brother through school.  He was the academic one.  He became a professor of meteorite studies in America.  I was expected to follow the scientific path. I failed.

I wanted to scribble so I went to Art college in Kingston Upon Thames.  Then I went to Goldsmiths College, London.  After forty years teaching, four children, living in Cumbria, Bristol, Arkansas, Dorset and Hampshire I am now able to scribble and try to make magic.

I paint people and places that fascinate, excite or scare me. A painting can say so much.

The painter starts the story.  The observer finishes it.
